Speech by Mr. Steve Marshall, ILO Liaison Officer at Job Fair

Concept note | 03 March 2014
Yangon, March 1, 2014 The ILO Liaison Officer, Mr. Steve Marshall, gave a speech at Job Fair. The speech is as follows:-

Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,

It is a great pleasure for me to be here today at this important job fair organised by the Myanmar Overseas Employment Agency Federation. Promoting productive employment, social protection and decent work are top priorities in developing the country and critical routes to alleviating poverty. In organising this job fair, the MOEAF is providing job seekers with the chance to explore a wide variety of job opportunities in a convenient and easy manner.

Finding secure jobs with social protection can transform people’s lives, providing families with the stability to make decisions and plan for the future, including the education of their children. At the country level, decent work for all, will contribute to the sustainable development of Myanmar

The ILO is a specialised Agency of the United Nations that promotes social justice and internationally recognised labour rights. It is dedicated to bring decent work, job-related security and better living standards to people worldwide. In order to formulate policies and to develop appropriate job markets it is critical to have up to date and accurate data about the labour force. In November last year, ILO Yangon signed a cooperation agreement with the Myanmar government to conduct the first comprehensive National Labour Force Survey in the country since 1990. The survey will also focus on youth employment and the challenges that youth face in moving from school to decent work. It will also help to identify policies to promote gender equality in the workplace.

Many of the youth visiting this job fair may well be looking at jobs overseas, attracted by higher wages and greater opportunities. This job fair provides the youth and all ages the possibility of finding out about work abroad with the assurance that the jobs are being offered by reputable companies and this should significantly reduce the risks that job seekers run if they use unlicenced or unknown brokers or agents to migrate for work. The Myanmar Overseas Employment Agency Federation (MOEAF) takes the responsibility of placing workers in safe employment seriously and is currently working with the ILO Triangle project in Yangon to develop a Code of Conduct and ranking system for the MOEAF members sending migrants to Thailand. The Triangle project will also set up Migrant Resource Centres in Labour Exchange offices in different areas (Kyaing Tung, Mandalay and Dawei) to provide information to migrants before they migrate and legal assistance in cases of exploitation or abuse.

Finally, I would like to congratulate the MOEAF on their hard work and excellent organising to arrange this job fair and to wish all the job seekers and employers the best of luck in find the right match – a match that results in productive, fair and decent work for the people of Myanmar and sustainable development for the country.

Thank you.
