‘Keep the Love Alive’: Oginome Stands Up to Child Labour
TOKYO - Ahead of the World Day Against Child Labour on 12 June, the ILO Office for Japan has released a music video for “Jewels - a song of love,” a track written and performed by Yoko Oginome for the Music Against Child Labour Initiative.
As one of the Initiative’s participating artists, Ms Oginome has been raising awareness with the ILO since December 2021. The ILO launched the Initiative in 2013 alongside Jeunesses Musicales International (JMI) and multiple other organizations to raise awareness of child labour through concerts and music education.
Oginome’s song emphasizes that all children are like jewels, shining from the moment they’re born. She calls on people to recognize, love, and connect with children living in harsh conditions.
Over the last few years, conflicts, crises, and the COVID-19 pandemic have plunged countless families into poverty—and forced millions more children into labour. Today, 160 million children are engaged in child labour. That’s almost one in ten children worldwide. According to an ILO and UNICEF joint report, further investment in universal social protection, such as cash benefits, will help millions of children realize their rights.
