Health workers in many countries face risk of contracting TB or HIV while providing care to patients. Despite answering the call to respond to the public’s care needs, health workers themselves often do not have access to HIV and TB services. In response to this gap the World Health Organization (WHO), International Labour Organization (ILO), and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) have joined their efforts to develop and launch joint policy guidelines. They are based on systematic literature reviews, consultations and an assessment of current practices in 21 country-based studies and incorporate the previous ILO-WHO guidelines on health services and HIV (2005) and Post-exposure prophylaxis (2008) and the principles of ILO Recommendation concerning HIV and AIDS and the World of Work, 2010, No. 200.
