  4. XIX World Congress on Safety and Health at Work - ILO Introductory Report: Global Trends and Challenges on Occupational Safety and Health

    This Introductory Report concerns some of the achievements and challenges of the last three years since the adoption of the Seoul Declaration on Safety and Health at Work at the XVIII World Congress on Safety and Health at Work for building a preventative safety and health culture. How to meet these challenges will be the subject of much discussion and debate at the Congress itself, which it is hoped will be another significant landmark in the history of promoting a preventative safety and health culture across the world.

  5. Istanbul Declaration on Safety and Health at Work

  6. Improving safety and health at work through a Decent Work agenda

    The project was developed by the ILO and the European Commission to better address safety and health at work as a vital component of decent work. It will be implemented over two and a half years between 2010 and 2012 in five pilot countries. The overall goal of the project is to contribute to a more inclusive and productive society through a reduction in occupational accidents and work-related diseases.

    The report examines existing legislation and practice on safety and health in agriculture in ILO member States. The term "legislation" is used in the broad sense to include statutes, regulations, codes of practice and other similar instruments of a legislative character. Both general labour codes and specific laws that address safety and health are examined. An attempt is made to analyse the application of legislation wherever possible, based on available information. The content of the report is based on information provided by member States through a survey, the ILO's legislative database (ILOLEX), the ILO's safety and health database (CISDOC) and other sources available at the International Labour Office in Geneva.

  8. Emerging risks and new patterns of prevention in a changing world of work

    The booklet calls for the design and development of innovative national and regional strategies and programmes, emphasizing the roles of governments, employers’ and workers’ organizations, safety and health practitioners and other stakeholders. It also recognizes ILO’s responsibility in spreading a preventive culture, through its standards and technical know-how, looking forward to a joint effort in reducing work-related fatalities, accidents and diseases.

  9. World Day for Safety and Health at Work – 28 April 2010

    This year, under the theme "Emerging risks and new patterns of prevention in a changing world of work" the day will draw attention on the current global challenges and the new context of occupational safety and health practice. It highlights technological advance, emerging workplace risks, and changing patterns of employment and workforce and thus, the need for new preventive approaches in facing these new challenges.

    Every year more than 2 million people die from occupational accidents or work-related diseases. "Injury and disease are not 'all in a day's work'", says ILO Director-General Juan Somavia. "Fatalities, accidents and illness at work can be prevented. We must promote a new 'safety culture' in the workplace - wherever work is done - backed by appropriate national policies and programmes to make workplaces safer and healthier for us all." The promotion of occupational safety and health is one of the means to make Decent Work a global reality.

  15. Making Decent Work a Global Goal and a National Reality, International Conference, Düsseldorf, Germany, 18-20 September 2007

    From 18-20 September 2007 over 200 participants from 65 countries met to discuss global and national efforts towards making international standards for Decent Work a practical reality. The Conference was organized by the ILO in partnership with the German and Portuguese governments, ISSA, WHO, IALI and other international organizations, with sponsorship from German organizations Basi, Messe Düsseldorf, BAD, DGUV, Fraport and TÜV Rheinland.
