Social dialogue and collective bargaining
in times of crisis: The case of Greece (Working Paper No. 38)
This paper is part of a series of national studies on collective bargaining and effective responses to the crisis under the Global Product on Supporting collective bargaining and sound industrial relations. It analyses the profound impacts of the financial crisis on industrial relations institutions and practices in Greece. A series of austerity measures have been put in place through new legislation. These include prohibition of salary increases, cuts in pay and benefits for public-sector employees, limits on public-sector hiring, increases in VAT and other taxes, changes in the limitations on mass layoffs and levels of severance compensation payments, and introduction of sub-minimum wages for new entrants to the labour market and those who are on apprenticeships. - ILO Dialogue, 10 March 2012

Pension Reform in Central and Eastern Europe - in times of crisis, austerity and beyond -
(pdf 1,63 MB)
A decade after the major reform in the 1990s, pension systems in the Central and Eastern Europe are now facing imminent challenges under the pressure of the financial consolidation in the aftermath of the global economic crisis. At the national level, each country has taken a different approach to tackle these issues. The publication consolidates the national efforts through case study of eight CEE countries (Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Poland and Romania). Through comparative analysis, it outlines possible solutions to the challenges which these countries are facing in common in the short- and long-term.
