Discussion of women Ambassadors and leading women journalists based in Hungary
The ILO Budapest Office organized a breakfast discussion for women Ambassadors based in Budapest and for women chief editors and leading journalists of major publications in Hungary to mark the International Women's Day in the framework of our CSR project on 12 March 2007.
List of participant Ambassadors:
Ms Ireny COMAROSCHI, Ambassador of Romaniaa
Ms April H.FOLEY, Ambassador of the United States of America
Ms Duduzile Moerane KHOZA, Ambassador of the Republic of South Africa
Ms Joanna STEMPINSKA, Ambassador of the Republic of Poland
Ms Chitra Devi V RAMIAH, Ambassador of Malaysia
The meeting was opened by Petra Ulshoefer, Director of the ILO SRO-Budapest Office, who presented the main findings of the Global Employment Trends for Women 2007 and stressed a need for actively promoting equality of opportunity for women in the subregion.
Following this, the Ambassadors described the situation of women in their countries: what are the main problems and improvements of gender equality in the world of work. These interventions were followed by the comments of Hungarian journalists about the existing gender discrimination in Hungary. The only woman editor-in-chief in the mainstream Hungarian media, Ms. Ilona Kocsis from Világgazdaság (business daily) was also present. The discussion was moderated by Mr. Tamás GYULAVÁRI, member of the Hungarian Equal Treatment Advisory Council.
Main conclusions of the event:
The equality for women in employment should be a central concern for the governments, social partners and civil society.
It is essential to recognize the persisting gender inequalities and to talk about them in order to be able to combat them.
Good equal opportunity legislation is important, but it should be entailed by law enforcement and monitoring systems.
The gender gap, pay gap is closing but slowly and in an uneven way with in and across countries.
The equality should start at home at the household level by sharing family responsibilities. Men should be partners in this process.

Ms April H.FOLEY, Ambassador of the United States of America and Mr Tamás GYULAVÁRI, member of the Hungarian Equal Treatment Advisory Council
