To comply with the changes of organisational focus, ILO activities in the South Pacific have taken different shapes since 1975. In the initial period, ILO Suva was pursuing technical corporation projects and activities mainly to promote institutional capacity of ILO constituents in different areas including International Labour Standards. This was done by developing national and sub-regional projects, organising seminars, workshops and training programmes in areas of ILO competence. These initiatives, later on, took the shape of Country Programmes. ILO Suva has developed country programmes for its Member States.
These programmes are titled:
• Framework for Action – Fiji
• Structural Adjustment at Minimum Social Cost – PNG
• Promoting Change – Solomon Islands
• Partnership for Development – Kiribati
The country programmes were transformed into Decent Work Country Programmes (DWCP) and Decent Work National Plans of Action since 2002 using the following four strategic objectives.
I. To promote and realize standards and fundamental principals and rights at work;
II. To create greater opportunity for women and men to secure decent employment and income;
III. To enhance the coverage and effectiveness of social protection for all;
IV. To strengthen tripartism and social dialogue
