Theatre Programme against Child TraffickingIPEC-funded theatre programme against child trafficking in Bangladesh

The Centre for Ethnic Children (CEC), a Bangladeshi NGO committed to the protection of children's and women's rights, has started a year long theatre programme against child trafficking, as part of the IPEC Project for Combating Trafficking in Children in South Asia (TICSA). This programme targets a rural audience of at least 125,000 in four districts in Bangladesh. The programme's centre piece - The Broken Dreams (Shishu Pacherer Itikatha) - relates real life stories of trafficked women and girls and addresses the wider issues underlying the problem, such as lack of education and employment.

The Director of CEC, Zillur Rahman John, considers theatre a "catalyst in bringing about (a positive) transformation" and affirms that "slow but sure changes in tacking the child trafficking issue" have taken place during the life time of the project where at least 25 children were rescued after introduction of theatre during phase I.
