| Workers’
Organizations :
Workers’ organizations are diverse, comprising almost
30 per cent of the organized workforce. With approximately
1,500 trade unions registered with the Government of Sri Lanka,
only a few commands a large following. Many of the workers’
organizations tend to be politicised, as most national trade
unions are supported by various political parties.
While no worker organization is excluded from the benefits
of ILO's work, activities are concentrated on trade unions
that are diverse both in terms of membership and sectors represented.
The ILO also works with collaborative bodies such as the National
Association for Trade Union Research and Education (NATURE),
consisting of 18 unions.
Employers :
The Employers
Federation of Ceylon is the only federation
of employers looking after the rights of employers. With 436
members, the organization plays an active role in five different
sectors:
» Hotels and
Tourism,
» Banking, Finance
and Insurance Services,
» Plantations,
» Manufacturing
and
» Services.
Ministry of Employment and Labour :
The Government
of SriLanka has carried forward
many of the good practices it has cultured over the previous
years and caters to the public by being an institution which
is both forward thinking and result-oriented. The Ministry
has recently initiated the necessary steps to establish a
National Plan of Action for Decent Work in Sri Lanka. The
Ministry was the motivator for Sri Lanka to become a lead
country in the Youth Employment Network (YEN) project initiated
by the ILO, in collaboration with the UNDP and the World Bank.
