ABOUT ILO

Born from the chaos of global war, tempered by nearly a century of turbulent change, the International Labour Organization is built on the constitutional principle that universal and lasting peace can be established only if it is based on social justice.

ILO is the source of such hallmarks of industrial society as the 8-hour day, employment policy, maternity protection, child-labour laws and other policies which promote workplace safety and peaceful industrial relations.

No country or industry could have afforded to introduce any of these in the absence of similar and simultaneous action by others.

ILO is the international institutional framework, which makes it possible to address such issues - and to find solutions allowing working conditions to improve everywhere. For detailed information on the history, aims, structure, and constitution of ILO, visit the sitemap.
