Current economic and social transformations propose challenges
that deeply question the articulation between education, both formal
and informal, and the world of labour. Two big topics dominate this
questioning. The first of them is the transformation of work organisation
and working relations, with its demands for flexibilisation, polyvalence
and competency to resolve situations of uncertainty; training must respond
to these demands with new strategies. The second is the problem of exclusion
from social participation; the existence of ample sectors of the population
in conditions of poverty with the consequence, among others, of early
abandonment from formal education. The youth that desert school only
gain access to the most precarious and unstable jobs and are the first
to be unemployed, and are in that situation more consistently. Another
great challenge of education is to respond to the needs of training
in these sectors, but pointing out that the creation of job positions
and the increase of opportunities for job insertion in qualified occupations
are essential in order for training to turn out to be useful to them.
Multiple programmes in Latin America, point in this direction. The present
volume reviews experiences selected by investigators from a group of
countries of the region. This set of works offers an interesting "state
of the art" on training for youth in a situation of poverty, at
the same time as they bring up a series that should be investigated
in the future.
