ILO Training Workshop on Occupational Safety and Health in the Tourism Sector, Cairo, Egypt, 12-13 November 2007
A two-day training workshop was held in Cairo on 12-13 November, for workers in the tourism industry of Egypt. It was attended by 32 participants from different sectors of the tourism industry (housekeepers, porters, page-boys, receptionists, managers, chefs, cooks, bartenders), and had three main objectives:A two-day training workshop was held in Cairo on 12-13 November, for workers in the tourism industry of Egypt. It was attended by 32 participants from different sectors of the tourism industry (housekeepers, porters, page-boys, receptionists, managers, chefs, cooks, bartenders), and had three main objectives:
- Increasing HIV/AIDS awareness, using the ILO Code of Practice on HIV/AIDS in the hospitality industry
- Promoting occupational safety and health in the hospitality industry by addressing the major hazards of this the industry, and introducing mitigatory measures
- Providing participants an opportunity to discuss their OSH concerns
Topics of debate included the hazards of secondhand smoking and alcohol consumption in the workplace, accidents in the workplace, an outline of sexually transmitted infections, common myths about HIV modes of transmission and the essence of ILO HIV policy.
