Ethiopian Trade Unions (CETU)’s training workshop on “Social Dialogue and Industrial Conflict Handling”

A three-day Confederation of Ethiopian Trade Unions (CETU)’s training workshop on “Social Dialogue and Industrial Conflict Handling” has commenced in the Southern City of Adama, in Ethiopia for all the Trade Unions in the Oromia Region. Delivering a Keynote address at the opening, Mr. George Okutho, Director of the ILO Country Office for Ethiopia and Somalia, noted that Ethiopia has ratified all the ILO fundamental Conventions, including Convention No. 87 and 98 and just two days ago, on 6th June 2011, it ratified Convention No. 144 on Tripartite Consultation.

The Government of Ethiopia continues to be committed to the implementation of these Conventions as has further been illustrated by it “underpinning collective bargaining and strengthening social dialogue in its recently adopted Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP), the Government development strategy for the next five years (2011-2015)”, says Ato Mesfin Sileshi, the Secretary General of CETU.

Mr. Okutho observed that the quality of social dialogue depends on the extent to which the social partners are able to negotiate collective agreements and industrial relations, and ability to effectively participate in formulating the broader national development policies and strategies that affect them individually and collectively. The workshop, therefore, “provides unique opportunity to reflect on the current environment for social dialogue, analyze and discuss trends and modalities and agree on a set of guidelines and/or improvements necessary to further promote social dialogue”, he concluded.
