Legislation and policies

This collection contains legislative texts (hard law) and soft law instruments (codes of practice, guidelines, policies) adopted by governments and employers' and workers' organizations and coalitions. The texts illustrate a variety of approaches by different States, but they are not presented as examples of good practice - nor is the list exhaustive.

The texts were gathered in order to produce an overview report on law and practice in member States on HIV/AIDS and the world of work. It represents the most comprehensive compilation to date of national laws and policies on HIV/AIDS, covering 170 countries - not all, however, make specific reference to the world of work.

The report in question - 'HIV/AIDS and the world of work' (see links below) - is part of the process of developing a new labour standard on HIV/AIDS with the aim of expanding and strengthening AIDS responses in the world of work, following a decision of the ILO Governing Body in March 2007. The draft standard - an autonomous Recommendation - will be discussed at the International Labour Conference in June 2009 and June 2010.

Read the report and its accompanying questionnaire in English, Français, Español, Arabic, Deutsch, Russian, and Chinese. You will also find an accompanying briefing note on the process of adopting the standard, with timetable in English, Français, Español, Arabic, Deutsch, Russian, and Portuguese.

Please note: It is important to emphasize that inclusion of a text in this collection does not guarantee that the text is in conformity with the ILO Code of Practice on HIV/AIDS and the world of work and other ILO instruments and standards. This collection is not intended to replace direct reference to the official source. Accordingly, ILO/AIDS expressly disclaims any liability for any omission, error of translation, typing error or any other mistake that may have occurred while reproducing the texts.
