Employment, Labour Markets and Youth Branch (EMPLAB)

EMPLAB supports governments, and workers’ and employers’ organisations to develop and implement gender-responsive employment and labour market policies with a focus on youth, in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

We work with member States to respond to their employment challenges and shape a better future of work by:
  • Building their capacities on the design, delivery and monitoring of gender-sensitive, youth inclusive employment policies;
  • Generating global knowledge and evidence through research, diagnostics and assessments;
  • Strengthening their ability to design, delivery and monitor employment services and labour market programmes for effective labour market transitions;
  • Mobilising resources and partnerships to scale up action and the impact of our work.

    12 February 2024

    Since the early 2000s, the ILO has increasingly been assisting countries to support the development of integrated and comprehensive employment policies. This Q&A provides insights on Part II of the publication “Two decades of national employment policies 2000-2020: Towards a new generation of national employment policies (NEPs)”. The review – the first of its kind - analyses the main characteristics and trends in national employment policies across the world and over time. The review highlights that a new generation of employment policies will need to pursue some existing challenges while also addressing new ones.
