Workplace Learning and Training

Workplace learning has become increasingly important during the last decade. One area of recent study by the ILO involves high performance work organisations. These organisations are relatively new phenomena, which have arisen as a consequence of globalisation. The concern here is to understand the reasons behind their growth and the benefits they offer for both employers and employees. Although they are still somewhat unusual they do provide a range of benefits for both groups, from higher levels of profitability and productivity for employers to higher earning and more challenging work for employees. The ILO has released a new publication on the subject entitled, Supporting Workplace Learning for High Performance Working. This publication is a result of the earlier studies on high performance work practices in a number of companies.

The workplace as a learning experience has been transformed in recent years. There are three main reasons for this:
  • the growth of the knowledge economy
  • the impact of the "New Economy" and information and communications technology (ICT) in improving productivity
  • the growing use of high performance working practices that are transforming the ways in which work is organised. This is being facilitated by developments in ICT.
