Recently, three Fellows completed their assignment: Derek Poulton in El Salvador
(Seguros Futuro), Joe Tayag in Tanzania (MicroEnsure) and Roberto Zanchi
in India (ICICI Prudential). To encourage more professionals to participate in
the program, the Facility asked them to summarize key learning`s from their
fellowships.
Microinsurance Fellowship Programme: When knowledge transfer yields results -

Over the course of her fellowship, Kelly Rendek - A Fellow based at Tenger Insurance in Mongolia - trained and coached the microinsurance
project team on insurance principles, market research, product development and other implementation issues. Kelly also mentored Oyun Batkhuyag as she prepared for her UK actuarial exams. The results were released in December 2010 and Oyun Batkhuyag successfully passed her first actuarial exam. Oyun was not only the sole test-taker in Mongolia who passed an UK actuarial exam in this sitting; she is the first to pass an UK actuarial exam written in Mongolia.
Climbing the learning curve: Capacity building workshops expand fundamental skills -

To leverage microinsurance practitioners as key disseminators of microinsurance knowledge, it is critical to strengthen their fundamental skills. As microinsurance is on a steep learning curve, the Facility conducted two workshops for two dozen participants aimed at improving the effectiveness of their knowledge transfer efforts. The workshops were held at the 3rd Microinsurance Inovation Forum in Manila Philippines and focused on designing responses to problems, achieving good results, identifying priority issues, and enabling clients to solve problems and implement solutions on their own. Mangesh Patankar, a Microinsurance Fellow, said, The tools introduced in the workshop, particularly concerning the stakeholder analysis, are directly useful for better planning of my work ahead.

In November, 15 participants, including grantees from the Facility, attending a two-day training course on microinsurance business planning hosted by the MIN Capacity Working Group. Limited understanding and lack of training in setting up a business plan have been frequently reported as major obstacles in the successful development and monitoring of microinsurance programs. As a result, the training focused on the macro environment affecting microinsurance programs, regulatory frameworks, markets, business strategy, distribution options, bearing insurance risk, and the vision, mission, goals (VMG) of the program.

The CCB Programme organized a 2-day Round Table for 15 selected microinsurance consultants and joint-mission participants in Frankfurt. These microinsurance specialists from around the world assembed for 2 days of networking, exchange and a consulting skills training.

In March this year, Denis Garand and Lisa Morgan conducted a full-day microinsurance workshop and field visit, sponsored by the Microinsurance Innovation facility, for 30 ethusiastic International Congress of Actuaries delegates from 11 countries.
