Employment Sector Executive Director José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs Highlights Disaster Risk Reduction
As part of the ILO’s comprehensive participation in this year’s Substantive Session of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the Organization launched a special edition of the journal @local.glob – Global Thinking for Local Development, published by the Delnet programme of the ILO’s International Training Centre in Turin.
José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, Executive Director of the ILO Employment Sector, introduced the edition on 19 July 2006 with a speech at a side event on the International Recovery Platform (IRP). ILO/CRISIS coordinates the ILO’s participation in the IRP, an inter-agency platform that seeks to reduce socio-economic vulnerability to natural disasters.
The current edition of the journal focuses on disaster risk reduction. It calls for the participation of local authorities and communities in worldwide efforts in this area. In his speech, Mr. Salazar noted that almost 75% of the world’s population face a risk of natural disasters, adding that current environmental trends can magnify disasters’ effects on the most vulnerable groups. He also expressed his hope that the special edition of @local.glob will enrich coordination at all levels in reducing disaster risks and promoting sustainable development.
