Knowledge Base Development

The ILO undertakes constant research to provide crisis practitioners with specific but flexible publications. These serve several key goals. First, they raise awareness of the importance of employment and related social concerns in crises. In addition, they facilitate successful interventions focused on these themes. Finally, they highlight the Whole of ILO efforts to adapt the broad ILO principles of decent work, tripartism, and social progress to crisis contexts.

ILO research on crises has two general aims:

  • To deepen understanding of the causes of crises and their consequences for employment-related issues. This also includes examining the steps required to increase decent work opportunities.
  • To provide practical guidelines on implementing these steps. The programme’s materials lay out the instruments and processes necessary to meet employment needs. They also systematically analyse ILO interventions to identify lessons and best practices. In recent years, the unit has researched many employment-promotion initiatives, focusing on skills training, Local Economic Development, the role of workers’ and employers’ organizations, the gender dimension, the impact of HIV/AIDS, and ex-combatants and the disabled.
