The International Standard Classification of Occupations (ISCO) is one of the main international classifications for which ILO is responsible. It belongs to the international family of economic and social classifications.

The International Standard Classification of Occupations is a tool for organizing jobs into a clearly defined set of groups according to the tasks and duties undertaken in the job. It is intended both for statistical users and for client oriented users. The main client oriented applications are in the recruitment of workers through employment offices, in the management of short or long term migration of workers between countries as well as in the development of vocational training programmes and guidance.

The first version of the International Standard Classifications of Occupations was adopted in 1957 by the Ninth International Conference of Labour Statisticians. It is known as ISCO-58. This version was superseded by ISCO-68, which was adopted by the Eleventh International Conference of Labour Statisticians in 1966. The third version of the International Standard Classification of Occupations, ISCO-88, was adopted by the Fourteenth International Conference of Labour Statisticians in 1987. Many national occupational classifications are based on one of the three ISCO versions, depending on the date in which they were developed.

ISCO has recently been updated to take into account developments in the world of work since 1988 and to make improvements in light of experience gained in using ISCO-88. The updating did not change the basic principles and structure of ISCO-88 but significant changes were made in some areas. The updated classification was adopted in December 2007 and is known as ISCO-08. The resolution adopting ISCO-08 and the classification structure are available on the ISCO Website in English, French and Spanish.

Updated definitions of the ISCO groups are progressively being released on the ISCO Website for comment. An alphabetical index of occupation titles and a correspondence table between ISCO-88 and ISCO-08 will also be released on the website as soon as possible. Final explanatory and definitional material will then be released on the website and published in book form. French and Spanish versions will be made available as soon as the English version has been finalized.
