Mr Charles Dan (Benin) was appointed Regional Director for the Regional Office for Africa at the level of Assistant Director-General, with effect from 1 July 2008. Born in 1960, Mr Dan graduated from the Université Paris II, Assas, with a master’s degree in public law, from the Université Paris I, La Sorbonne, with a Diploma of higher studies in public law, and from the Institut d’Etudes Politiques in Paris, France. Mr Dan joined the ILO in 1994 as senior specialist in employers’ activities in the ILO Multidisciplinary Advisory Team in Dakar. In 1997, he was transferred to the Bureau for Employers’ Activities (ACT/EMP) in Geneva as official responsible for relations with African employers. In 1999, he became a member of the Office of the Director-General. In addition to his functions in the Office of the Director-General, in 2003, he was appointed Director of the ILO Preparatory Team to the African Union Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government on Employment and Poverty Alleviation. Prior to joining the ILO, Mr Dan worked for the International Organisation of Employers (IOE) where he successively held the positions of Assistant to the Secretary-General, Deputy Executive Secretary and Executive Secretary.
