Press release | 14 February 2014
BEIRUT (ILO News) – The International Labour Organization (ILO) will hold a Solution Forum in Doha, Qatar to promote youth employment in the Arab region through South-South and triangular cooperation.

The Forum, which runs from 18 to 20 February, is part of the first-ever regional South-South Development Expo for Arab States. It will discuss successful experiences in the fight against youth unemployment that could be relevant for countries in the region.

“South-South learning can expand the impact of national efforts to promote young people’s access to decent work. The Forum provides a platform to share good practices that have proven to be effective in promoting decent employment for youth”, says Jürgen Schwettmann, Director of the ILO’s Partnerships and Field Support Department.

The Forum will showcase youth employment initiatives that have implemented policies and programmes and benefited from South-South cooperation and activities, including through peer-to-peer learning, exchange of expertise and innovative approaches. The results of the first global platform on youth employment and migration that implemented innovative South-South collaboration approaches will also be presented at the Forum.

Building broad-based partnerships

“Building broad-based partnerships, including with young people, and promoting cross-country and global networks can help address the current youth employment crisis through innovative solutions”, says Gianni Rosas, Coordinator of the ILO Youth Employment Programme, which coordinates the Knowledge Management Facility for Youth Employment and Migration (KMF) on behalf of the United Nations System.

KMF organizes thematic and global workshops to share experience, lessons learnt, and good practices on youth employment and migration policies and programmes, with national partners, including representatives of governments, employers’ organizations, trade unions and representatives of young people that are affected by the current crisis.

Promoting jobs for young women in the Arab world through cooperatives
Palestinian women’s economic inclusion has been increased through the establishment of saving & credit cooperatives. Cooperative projects can be scaled up through effective partnerships that allow countries in the region to benefit from regular exchanges of experience.

“Cooperatives and financial support strengthens their role in society and helps build stronger communities and advance equal opportunities for economic participation of young women and recent female graduates in the Arab Countries. “ Randa Abed Rabbo Zein, Director, Union of Cooperative Associations for Saving and Credit (UCASC)
“The examples that will be presented during the Forum show that South-South and triangular cooperation can bolster effective partnerships in the Arab region in a practical manner that promotes youth employment, green jobs and sustainable development,” says Frank Hagemann, Deputy Director of the ILO Regional Office for Arab States.

According to Hagemann, workers’ and employers’ organisations have a key role to play in the promotion of decent work for youth in Arab States.

“South-South and triangular cooperation modalities can strengthen national and regional responses, as well as engage a broad variety of actors and practitioners with a view to producing innovative solutions and promoting decent work for youth.”
