ILO and Finland sign cooperation agreement on Trade for Decent Work

On Monday 19 July, the International Labour Organization has signed a cooperation agreement with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland to further support the application of the ILO Fundamental Conventions in EU trading partner countries through improved labour relations and working conditions.

Finland joins the Trade for Decent Work Project, launched on 1 January 2019 by the ILO and the European Commission, which provides global initiatives in the area of ILS and a country-focused facility supporting a number of target countries. With the generous support from Finland, the project will expand the action in the five African target countries of the project: Cabo Verde, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Madagascar and Mozambique until 31 December 2022.

ILO Director of the Department of Partnerships and Field Support, Rie Vejs Kjeldgaard voiced ILO’s appreciation for the strategic support provided by Finland, being a perfect example of the Team Europe innovation. The joint partnership allows the ILO to deepen and strengthen the ongoing action towards the application of International Labour Standards in the five African partner countries of the project, maximizing the impact and sustainability and responding to the most pressing needs. Her Excellency Ms. Kirstie Kauppi, Ambassador to the Permanent Mission of Finland in Geneva, expressed Finland’s content to join the action together with the European Commission, which reaffirms the commitment to further strengthen the partnership between Finland and the ILO, as expressed by Finland’s Minister for Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade of Finland, His Excellency Ville Skinnari to the ILO’s Director General, Guy Ryder, during their meeting in November last year.



The action facilitated by the contribution from Finland will focus on five specific objectives in the five African partner countries: i) reinforcing the implementation of International Labour Conventions; ii) strengthening the capacity of the labour inspection to actively contribute to Finland joins the Trade for Decent Work Project, launched on 1 January 2019 by the ILO and the European Commission, which provides global initiatives in the area of ILS and a country-focused facility supporting a number of target countries. With the generous support from Finland, the project will expand the action in the five African target countries of the project: Cabo Verde, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Madagascar and Mozambique until 31 December 2022.
