The ILO Country Office for the Philippines (CO-Manila) publishes a wide range of books, reports, working papers, training manuals, CD-ROMs, videos and flash movies. Some of these can be downloaded directly. Others can be requested or purchased in hard copy from the ILO Knowledge Centre in Manila or by email.

    The manual aims to improve productivity through low-cost improvement in working conditions in small and medium-enterprises, and to build a capacity within government, employers and workers organizations to plan, organize, implement, follow up and evaluate programme to promote improvements in working conditions and productivity.

  1. The way we live: Indigenous practices of the Ifugaos, Atis and Badjao of the Philippines

    The INDISCO Programme supports and promotes the preservation of sustainable indigenous knowledge systems and practices particularly environment protection and natural resources management. The study documents the valuable traditional knowledge systems and practices of three indigenous communities in the Philippines: the Ifugaos; the Atis; and the Badjaos in order to ensure their preservation and promote environmentally sound and sustainable development.

  2. A better place to work: Safety, health and productivity

    The manual shows how workers can promote and take simple, effective, low-cost action to improve their working conditions and raise productivity. Workers will find practical and useful ideas on safe handling and storage of materials, and on how lightning, work stations, machines, welfare facilities and work organization can be improved.

    The study was done in three reconnaissance, actual field interviews and additional follow-up interviews with registered and non-registered subcontractors. The last phase included occular visits and unstructured interviews with homebased subcontractors.

    The Interdepartmental Project on the Urban Informal Sector aims at contributing to efforts to progressively improve the quality of employment, particularly productivity, social protection and occupational safety and health.

    The book indicates some basic principles and gives many examples of improvements which have a direct impact both on production facilities and operations and on the motivation and efficiency of workers.

  3. "We evaluate...": INDISCO partner indigenous and tribal communities evaluate their own development projects in India and the Philippines

  5. Helping the hard ones: Child scavengers of the Philippines

    This case study describes an experimental programme with scavenger children at the huge garbage dump in Manila, Philippines known as Smokey Mountain. The study shows the model that was used, the process by which it was developed, and the insights gained about child scavenging and its physical and emotional effects. The intention is to give a practitioner's perspective on the difficulties and importance of child labour work.

  6. Credit unions as channels of micro-credit lines: The Philippine case

    The report presents the findings of a sample survey of 105 credit unions affiliated to two-nationwide federations. The survey focused on the effects of external funding on the growth of credit unions, their resource base and diversity especially savings mobilization from members, profitability and loan delinquency.

    In 1957, the ILO promulgated Indigenous and Tribal Peoples Convention No. 107, an accord which essentially seeks to integrate the Indigenous and Tribal Peoples into the mainstream of society.

  8. Processes of formalization and informalization: Selected cases

    The legal definition of informal sector enterprises focuses on the fact that they are not registered and do not, therefore, apply the various registrations which are normally adhered to by formal sector enterprises. It is important to identify the reasons or constraints which prevent such enterprises from registering with the local and/or national government agencies.
