Signing of joint initiative with the Ministry of Labour and Employment (MoLE) to protect women and girls from trafficking

The Ministry of Labour and Employment (MoLE) and the ILO Nepal signed a partnership agreement for implementation of the Work in Freedom Programme funded by the Government of UK/ Department for International Development (DFID).

The “Work in Freedom” is a five years programme aims to prevent women and girls from being trafficked and trapped for labour exploitation in foreign employment, particularly in domestic work. The major interventions of the programme includes information sharing and awareness raising at source areas; improve monitoring and enforcement of ethical recruitment practices; strengthen capacity of service providers to improve work place practices and support services; provide technical assistance to the government for design, monitoring, and enforcement of law and policies; and knowledge management through conducting study and research.

At the regional level, the programme will work in Nepal, India, and Bangladesh as an origin countries and Lebanon, Jordan, and India as destination countries of women migrant workers. In Nepal, the programme will be implemented in 8 source districts in addition to the national level interventions in Kathmandu to reach approximately 25,000 women migrant (or potential migrant) workers throughout the period.
