Textile exporting units in Faisalabad trained on compliance with Labour Standards

From 8-22 December 2015, the ILO in collaboration with the Pakistan Textile Exporters Association (PTEA) and Oxfam-Novib will run a series of seminars covering eight thematic areas on International Labour Standards. The seminars target management and workers in 12 textile exporting industrial units in Faisalabad with the objective of raising awareness on and enhancing compliance with labour standards and labour laws in the textile sector of Pakistan.

FAISALABAD (ILO News): Textile industries in Faisalabad have pledged to ensure compliance with international labour standards and national labour laws – particularly focusing the safety and health of workers at their workplaces.  This was stated by representatives of 12 textile industrial units who attended the first session on ILS Compliance focusing ‘Occupational Safety & Health’ in Faisalabad on 9th December 2015.

ILO is collaborating with the Pakistan Textile Exporters Association (PTEA) and Oxfam-Novib to implement a series of orientation seminars for the management and workers of 12 selected textile exporting units covering eight thematic areas of international labour standards.  These eight areas include (i) elimination of child labour; (ii) prohibition of forced labour; (iii) non-discrimination at workplace; (iv) Promoting freedom of association & collective bargaining; (v) promoting minimum wages; (vi) ensuring employment security; (vii) ensuring proper working hours; and (viii) promoting occupational safety & health at workplaces. 

The orientation seminars are targeted at the management and workers of 12 textile units from Faisalabad who have volunteered to enhance compliance with labour standards. 

Mr Saad Gilani, Senior Programme Officer, highlighted key international Conventions and the requirements stipulated in these conventions on the selected thematic areas.  He also apprised audience about key statistics, situation of national institutions and concepts for compliance. 

Mr Javaid Kahlon and other officials from the Government of Punjab Labour and Human Resource Department highlighted the salient legal provisions on the subject and also elaborated easy tips and steps for ensuring compliance with laws without major hassle. 

These seminars are part of a three year collaboration between the ILO and PTEA for enhancing ILS compliance in the exporting units of textile industries whereby an ‘Integrated Compliance and Reporting (ICAR)’ system has been established at Faisalabad level which will identify key gaps in compliance and will provide necessary technical support for ensuring corrective measures at workplaces.  A robust communication system will also be put in place to highlight the major compliance initiatives undertaken by the Government and private sector.
