Better Work Viet Nam
Better Work is an innovative partnership program between the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) dedicated to enhancing labor standards and global supply chain competitiveness. The initiative encompasses the development of both global tools and country-level programs, with a key focus on scalable and sustainable solutions that foster collaboration among government agencies, employers, workers' organizations, and international brands.

The project works in partnership with the ILO-IFC Programme, Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs (MOLISA), Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), and the Viet Nam General Confederation of Labour (VGCL).Target beneficiaries

Implemented in Viet Nam since 2009, Better Work Viet Nam covers the garment and footwear industries, employing an integrated approach that encompasses assessment, advisory, and training services at the factory level. Our collaboration extends to diverse stakeholders, including MOLISA, VGCL, VCCI, international brands, vendors, factories, trade associations, and other relevant organizations within the apparel and footwear sectors.
Main activities
Better Work’s factory engagement model aims to establish sustainable, resilient and inclusive enterprises, recognizing that such enterprises generate employment, promote decent work, are more productive and profitable, and positively impact workers and their families.Factories enrolled in Better Work go through a process of learning that includes assessments, advisory sessions, industry seminars and training. This process combines the use of in person and virtual activities in a hybrid format to ensure that the factory engagement meets the factory’s needs and remains uninterrupted in circumstances where onsite visits might be difficult. Factories requiring a higher level of support receive a higher level of in person services, including unannounced assessment visits.
Outcomes
By 2027, a joint and inclusive roadmap for a scalable approach to high and sustained compliance and social dialogue agreed to by and jointly implemented with programme partners.By 2027, employers and workers and their representatives in the Better Work programme uphold and are protected by national labour laws and fundamental principles and rights at work; enterprises in the sector that have emerged from the COVID-19 crisis are more sustainable, resilient and inclusive.
By 2027, Better Work’s impact on workers, businesses and compliance is sustained by national institutions that leverage the programme’s approaches, data and evidence.
By 2027, enterprises that participate in Better Work have adopted policies and practices on responsible business conduct that support the realization of decent work.
By 2027, Better Work’s knowledge and methods have created positive social and environmental impacts beyond the programme as they are adopted in other countries and sectors.
