Training of Trainers (TOT) for Farmers' Union on Occupational Safety and Health

The TOT is organized in Danang City (21-24 November 2016) and in Viet Tri City, Phu Tho Province in December 2016 in collaboration with the Central Farmers' Union and the Department for Work Safety, MOLISA. Participants attending the TOT are provided with knowledge, methods, tools and approaches on OSH in general and risk assessment in particular to improve working conditions in the agricultural area in light of the new mandate.

Around 50 participants being leaders and staff in charge of OSH from 13 provincial Farmers' Unions in the Central, including Thanh Hóa, Nghệ An, Hà Tĩnh, Quảng Bình, Quảng Trị, Thừa Thiên Huế, Đà Nẵng, Quảng Nam, Quảng Ngãi, Bình Định, Phú Yên, Khánh Hòa and Bình Thuận attend the first training sessions and the same number of participants who will attend the second training session come from the Northern provinces, consisting of Hà Nội, Vĩnh Phúc, Bắc Ninh, Quảng Ninh, Hải Dương, Hải Phòng, Hưng Yên, Thái Bình, Hà Nam, Nam Định, Ninh Bình, Phú Thọ and Thái Nguyên.

The TOT is designed to meet the demand for improving OSH skills and to build up a pool of trainers in different regions of Viet Nam for the Farmers’ Union. The participants are trained in knowledge, methods, tools and approaches with which to deliver training to farmers on OSH in general and risk assessment in particular. As a result, the TOT will empower these trainers with the knowledge and skills to transfer OSH know-how to rural farmers. These activities will benefit young workers because, although data is limited, it is clear that the largest share of youth in rural areas work in agriculture.

The training sessions apply the participatory approach and dynamic role play that aims to help trainers, after the TOT, target the followings:
  • To acquire knowledge and skills in requirements of the OSH Law and risk assessment, in order to transfer the know-how to other local farmers’ union staff, farmers and farmworkers, and other stakeholders;
  • To acquire tools and methodologies to mainstream OSH content in trainings of farmers’ unions at local levels;
  • To gain a deeper understanding of the roles of farmers and others in ensuring safety and health at agricultural workplaces and; and
  • To learn to conduct a risk assessment at an agricultural workplace and help farmers and farm workers identify and control the OSH hazards at their workplaces.
