Winners announced for Viet Nam's 2nd Media Award on Labour and Employment
Winners included journalists of Can Tho, Sai Gon Giai Phong, Tuoi Tre and Dan Tri newspapers. The second national labour media award with total prizes worth VND100 million was co-organized by the Academy of Journalism and Communication, the Central Committee for Propaganda and Education and the International Labour Organization.
HANOI (ILO News) – The second national Media Award on Labour and Employment has found its new winners today (16 April) with four prizes worth VND100 million (nearly US$5,000) in total going to journalists of Can Tho, Sai Gon Giai Phong, Tuoi Tre and Dan Tri newspapers.
However, no first prize was selected among nearly 200 entries competing for the award.
Two second prizes worth VND30 million (nearly $1,500) each were voted by a board of judges including representatives of the Central Committee for Propaganda and Education, the Academy of Journalism and Communication (AJC), the Viet Nam Journalists Association, the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, the Viet Nam General Confederation of Labour, the Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the International Labour Organization (ILO).
A second prize on “Youth Employment” was handed to a series of stories entitled “Young people in the Mekong Delta find pathways to well-off life” (Thanh niên miền Tây bứt phá làm giàu) by journalists Vo Quoc Thai, Pham Van Trung and Truong Thanh Thu of the Can Tho Newspaper.
The other second prize on “Laws and Journalists” was given to a series of stories on “Retired workers to turn poor” (Công nhân về hưu thành người nghèo) written by journalists Duong Loan and Hong Hiep of the Sai Gon Giai Phong Newspaper.
Meanwhile, two third prizes of VND20 million (nearly $1,000) in cash each went to two series of investigations – one on “Alarming exploitation of migrant workers from the countryside” (Đau xót nạn bóc lột lao động nhà quê) by journalists Nguyen Van Loc, Tran Duc Phu and Le Van Thanh of the Tuoi Tre Newspaper and the other on “The employers who disappeared when suffering loss” (Những ông chủ lời ăn lỗ chạy) by Pham Xuan Tho which was published on the Dan Tri online newspaper.
“As a young reporter, I am very happy and proud to win the Second Prize and that the topic of our story was appreciated by the judges. When I wrote about how young people in the Mekong Delta found the pathway to well-off life, it was also my concern on jobs-related issues for young people in this region,” said journalist Thai of Can Tho Newspaper.
The award, which was the second one of its type, was co-organized by the AJC, the Central Committee for Propaganda and Education and the ILO with an aim to encourage and recognize the efforts by journalists to write and produce better and more in-depth stories on the world of work.
Addressing the award ceremony organized at the AJC and attended by Canadian Ambassador David Devine and Dutch Ambassador Nienke Trooster among VIP guests, the academy rector Truong Ngoc Nam said: “Labour and employment have become major topics covered by different types of media today… Information in this area always attracts the public interest, which can be seen through their regular interaction.”
According to ILO Viet Nam Director, Gyorgy Sziraczki, the role of the media is fundamental to the world of work as they allow the public to be informed about jobs and working conditions while providing people with fair investigations, constructive criticisms and solution-oriented discussions.
“The better informed the public are on issues affecting their working life, the easier is for the Government to find sensible solutions and develop effective policies that have the confidence of working women and men,” he said.
The second National Media Award on Labour and Employment was a step forward compared to the first one organized in 2014 as the number of entries from the print,
broadcast and online newspapers doubled.
However, Deputy Head of the Party Central Committee for Propaganda and Education, Nguyen The Ky, who was the head of the award’s jury board, expected that the award would continue to grow in the third year in both number of entries and quality of stories.
“I hope many more journalists will join this award next year and its reputation will expand as the significance of labour and employment issues in Viet Nam,” he added.
