Dominican Republic: Green Jobs in the Banana Industry

A Joint UN Programme, focussing on the banana value chain in the Dominican Republic, promotes environmental practices among banana producers.

The ILO was one of the implementing UN agencies of the Joint Programme Strengthening the Banana value chain by Growing Inclusive Markets, under the UN MDG Achievement Fund (2010-2012). This programme helped to strengthen the banana value chain by boosting its competitiveness, contribute to the growth and development of small farmers and their workers, and thereby reduce poverty in the producing areas. Within the context of this programme, the ILO invited a delegation of fifteen technicians and producers of bananas from the Dominican Republic to visit Costa Rica in 2011. The aim of the visit was to learn about the experience of this country's banana sector in plastic recycling as well as environmental and labour practices, promoting south-south exchange.
