Signing of Implementation Agreement between the ILO-EIIP-KfW Project and the Ministry of Agriculture in Jordan

ILO in Jordan signs a new Implementation agreement with Ministry of Agriculture in Jordan for the afforestation of 1,750 dunums (175 Ha) in 4 Governorates namely Irbid, Jerash, Ajloun an Al Balqa.

Amman, Jordan (ILO News) – International Labour Organization (ILO) in Jordan signed a new agreement with the Ministry in Agriculture as part of Employment Intensive Investment Programme (EIIP) in Jordan through phase VI of an EIIP project funded by German Government, BMZ through KfW.

BMZ supported the ILO EIIP project with 18 million euros that should cover the activities for 24 months. The aim is to increase short-term income and improve living environment, through decent paid employment while providing the young Jordanians and Syrians with suitable skills that will help them to get longer job opportunities. The project will have partnerships with Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Local Administration, Ministry of Labor, and several municipalities to implement the activities.

The funding support for this second Implementation Agreement amounts to JOD 2,160,843. which will be contributed by the ILO project through the German Development Bank (KfW) on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The timeline to complete the project is 16 months.

The total funding for the ministry from the KfW funded project will be 2,364,216 JOD that is generating 120,420 paid green decent worker days and 1,250 job opportunities for Jordanians and Syrians through the employment intensive approach.

These jobs will be created by planting 89,000 trees in 1,750 dunams (175 Ha) in Al Koora area in Irbid governate and in Kofranjeh in Ajloun governorate, the rehabilitation of two forests in Bani Kenanah in Irbid governorate, and through nurseries in two governorates of Irbid and AlBalqa. The Ministry of Agriculture will install 9,000 meters of fencing material to protect the new forests. The programme is using Cocoon technology which saves 90% of water for irrigation.

His Excellency Eng. Khalid Hneifat, Minister of Agriculture, stated that “the agreement is in line with the royal vision to improve the agricultural sector and create job opportunities in this sector”.

Dr. Mark Schwiete, Director KfW Office Amman, who attended the signing ceremony stated that KfW and the German Government are committed to support economic opportunities and employment creation in Jordan. Through afforestation activities, this phase of the program will enhance sustainable management of forest areas contributing to clean green environment which are key to the climate crisis”.

Mr. Shailendra Jha Kumar, Chief Technical Advisor ILO stated that “ILO is happy to be part of the implementation of National Afforestation Plan of Jordan government with Ministry of Agriculture, we had a very nice and professional experience from the first implementation agreement that completed with quality and on time “.

The Employment Intensive Infrastructure Programme (EIIP) in Jordan Phase VI is being implemented by the ILO through a generous funding from BMZ through KFW.

The EIIP project has started in 2016 in Jordan in response to the Syrian crisis and to help Jordan Government in facing the challenges related to the Syrian influx. It focuses on increasing short term employment through improving infrastructure and environment and to provide youth with skills that will support them to find longer job opportunities.

The project is inclusive for Jordanian, Syrians, men, women, and persons with disability.
