Romania ratifies the ILO Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC, 2006)
Romania is the 70th ILO member State to ratify the Convention.
On 24 November 2015, the Government of Romania deposited with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) the instrument of ratification of the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC, 2006). Romania is the 70th ILO member State to have ratified this landmark Convention. As the fourth pillar of the international maritime legal regime, in complement to key Conventions of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the Convention establishes and protects decent working and living conditions for seafarers while ensuring conditions of fair competition for shipowners. Romania has over 25,000 seafarers and a merchant fleet of 82,911 gross tonnage of shipping. It also hosts major sea ports along the Black Sea, including the Port of Constanta, which ranks among the first 10 European ports and intersects trade routes linking the markets of landlocked countries spanning from Central and Eastern Europe to Central Asia and the Far East.
The MLC, 2006 entered into force on 20 August 2013. The Convention will enter into force for Romania on 24 November 2016, that is, one year after its ratification. For more background information, please visit the dedicated MLC webpage at /mlc.
