Labour market transitions: Findings and research directions from a novel dataset

In this virtual event, authors of the ILO brief that introduces this occupational mobility network will discuss their collaboration, methods used, initial findings, and future research directions that may be pursued in 2022 and beyond.

Who moves jobs, and who stays? How difficult is it, in reality? New technologies, demographic shifts, climate change, the ongoing COVID-19 crisis and other trends are reshaping jobs and workplaces. Labour market transitions in which people change their jobs or occupations are likely to become more frequent in the future. Thus, policy makers, researchers, business leaders, and worker representatives need to better understand these labour market transitions, their causes and consequences.

As part of a research collaboration with Eightfold.ai and researchers from the University of Oxford, the ILO Research department created an occupational mobility network for the United States, using a data set comprising more than 100 million individual career paths from Eightfold.ai, a California technology company. This new network is helping to answer questions about labour market mobility and forms the basis for new research directions and future decision making.

Speakers:

● Rick Samans, Director of Research, ILO
● Maria del Rio-Chanona, Research Fellow, Complexity Science Hub, Vienna
● Kamal Ahluwalia, President, Eightfold.ai

Tentative Agenda:

● Introduction
● Overview of Research Method
● Topic for discussion 1: Why are labour market transitions so important in the current world of work? What transitions are we seeing, or anticipating, and why?
