GENEVA (ILO News) – The International Labour Organization’s (ILO) flagship business management training programme (SIYB) has trained more than 15 million potential entrepreneurs and led to the creation of close to 9 million jobs worldwide, a new ILO study shows.

The Start and Improve Your Business (SIYB) course focuses on helping to establish and develop small businesses as a strategy for creating more and better employment for women and men, particularly in emerging economies. China is the biggest market for SIYB globally, followed by South Asia, East Asia & Pacific, and Sub-Saharan Africa.

The Start and Improve Your Business Global Tracer Study: 2011-2015 indicates a rapid global expansion of the programme since the early 1990s. By the end of 2015, the SIYB programme had trained 380 Master Trainers and 64,740 Trainers in close to 3,340 partner organizations in more than 100 countries. Together, the trainers have trained an estimated 15 million people. Out of these 15 million, 10.5 million took the course during the period 2011–15.

“The SIYB Global Tracer Study demonstrates significant achievements in business start-up and job creation. Moving forward, the programme would like to consolidate this by introducing a more market systems approach in service delivery, where trainers tailor business support services to meet the needs of the enterprises and also charge for their services to ensure financial sustainability,” said Pranati Mehtha, ILO Technical Officer for the SIYB programme in the Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) Unit.

“As the needs of the entrepreneurs are dynamic, the SIYB programme plans to introduce additional tools to respond to the demands of high-growth enterprises and online businesses as well as push towards a greener entrepreneurship model to combat the challenge of climate change,” she added.

The outreach of SIYB during the period 2011–15 (10.5 million) was over twice as high as that (4.5 million) documented in previous tracer studies, which covered the period from the early 1990s to 2010. The Study estimates that the training course has led to the start-up of at least 2.65 million new businesses and the expansion of 40 per cent of existing businesses.
