GENEVA (ILO News) – Deeply regretting the loss of life of at least nine UN staff members following the attack on the UN premises in Algiers on 11 December 2007, the Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Juan Somavia announced the death of an ILO staff member, Mr. Abderrahim Hanniche, as a result of the bomb blast. Two other ILO staff have suffered severe injuries.

“We are all shocked and saddened by this tragic development and wish to extend our sincerest condolences to Mr. Hanniche’s wife and family. Our thoughts and prayers also go to all UN colleagues in Algiers and their families who have been affected by this tragedy”, Mr. Somavia said.

The Director-General has despatched an official mission to Algiers as an expression of solidarity and to offer practical support in these very traumatic circumstances to the ILO staff in Algiers.
