Filling the skills gaps and addressing the mismatches - What can business do?

This one hour webinar with ILO experts on skills and employability will explore the contribution of enterprises to building a skilled workforce in their countries of operations. The discussion will focus on common challenges companies face in developing and implementing a skills and employability policy and practical examples of private sector engagement in skills systems.

Dynamic and sustainable enterprises require a skilled workforce to improve their competitiveness and continue to innovate . However, they often cannot find women and men with the right skills on the labour market because often the national education and training systems have limited capacities to develop and offer curricula that anticipate the skills required by industry.

With 73 million young women and men looking for work and the increasing attention being paid to the issue of “skills mismatch”, the role of employers in skills systems is therefore gaining greater importance. The active engagement of the private sector can take many forms, including CSR initiatives that provide training to local unemployed youth, specialised accredited short-course technical training delivered through enterprise-institute partnerships, and enterprise involvement in workforce development boards or industry skills councils.

This webinar is part of the webinar series organized by the ILO and the United Nations Global Compact and contributes to Sustainable Development Goals 8 and 4.
