    Makes provision for international medical certificates for seafarers. Also establishes that no person shall be engaged for employment on a vessel unless he produces a certificate attesting his fitness for the work for which he is to be employed.

    Makes provision for minimum wage for employees working on Egyptian merchant ships. Also provides for sustenance allowance, seafarer's bonus, cargo allowance on sea going ships, travel allowance, allowances for radio officers, engine capacity allowances, winch maintenance allowance, procedure allowance, hours of work and rest periods, additional wages, leave, and miniumum age of employment on ships.

    Act No. 1 of 1998 to amend certain provisions of Act No. 12 of 1964 concerning the establishment of the General Egyptian Merchant Shipping Company.

    Specifies requirements to be met in catering for the crews of vessels of 500 tonnes or more. A detailed schedule shows the minimum weekly quantities of food to be provided to seafarers.

    Order No. 143, 1990, of the Minister of Transportation and Maritime Transport to issue regulations to implement certain provisions of Law No. 232, 1989, respecting vessel safety.

    Establishes a commission in charge of the interests of Egyptian workers repatriated from Kuwait and Iraq, including evaluation of damage sustained by them, measures for the protection of their rights and property in those countries and provision of employment opportunities for them.

    Governs ships (Title I), shipowners (Title II chap. I), the captain (Title II chap. II), seafarers and seafarers' employment contracts (Title II, chap. III), use of the ship (Title III), accidents at sea (Title IV) and martime insurance (Title V). Repeals the Commerical Shipping Code of 13 November 1883.
