Abstract/Citation: Under the Act, a cooperative is an association of persons who have voluntarily joined together to achieve a common social and economic end through the formation of a democratically managed and controlled organization. Provisions are made for the establishment of a department of cooperative developement which provides assistance, guidance and advice relating to the organization, management, coordination and integrated functionning of cooperatives. Conditions for registration include a membership of at least eleven individuals and the approval of the registrar , (whereas conditions for registration of a secondary cooperative include a membership of at least three cooperators It sets forth the criteria for membership (as well as its termination) and lists the shares it may hold. Other provisions cover the management and organization of cooperatives, general meetings, the managing committee, capital and financial affairs, accounts and audit, settlement of disputes, inspection and inquiry. Specifies that a cooperative may grant loans to its members as well as to another cooperative.
