Socio-economic development plans

ILO and stakeholders begin drafting socio-economic development plans to enhance job opportunities in areas most affected by the Syrian Refugee influx

The four-day workshop brings together stakeholders from Irbid and Mafraq to discuss the development of three-year strategic plans aimed at accelerating job creation in selected sectors.

Officials from various ministries, as well as employer and worker representatives and academics among other stakeholders from Irbid and Mafraq, have gathered to begin consultation on developing three-year socio-economic development plans for each governorate that aim to bolster employment and business growth in these areas.

The four-day workshop, supported by the ILO and To Excel consulting firm, will help participants in reaching a consensus on priority areas of intervention and build their capacity in drafting and implementing the strategies, which will contribute to existing national strategies aimed at generating employment in the country’s vast industries.

The full-fledged strategies, which will include practical measures that stimulate job creation, will be launched in September and presented to the Jordanian government as well as development partners for implementation.

The strategies are part of the ILO’s response to the Syrian Refugee crisis in Jordan, which among other interventions, aims to support Jordanian host communities in areas most affected by the Syrian refugee influx.

The ILO interventions have so far focused on the agricultural sector, namely boosting the quality and production of olives in Irbid and tomatoes in Mafraq. The strategies will include interventions in other sectors, such as the industrial sector, transportation and tourism.
