Beijing (ILO News) – The number of electronic platforms matching the demand and supply for labour services is soaring in China as in many parts of the world. To get a better understanding of these new business models and their impact on workers, companies and society at large, the ILO organized a discussion on December 8 focusing on the Chinese situation.

The webinar, opened by the Director General of the international department of the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security (MOHRSS), Mr. Hao Bin, and the ILO Chief of Branch Mr. Philippe Mercadent, gathered over 100 participants. In addition to ILO and MOHRSS officials, representatives of Chinese social partners, academia and national and international experts shared their research and crossed their views.

During the session, the ILO working paper on Digital Labour Platforms and Labour Protection in China was presented by the author, Ms. Irene Zhou. The paper explores the implications of digital labour platforms for labour regulation in China and the potential applicability of existing laws and regulations to platform work. ILO senior economists Janine Berg and Uma Rani shared the finding of their respective studies.

As labour platforms continue to transform the world of work at an unprecedented pace, the ILO will continue to generate research and analysis with a view to promoting decent work for all.
