BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN – Brunei Darussalam’s first labour force survey is to be carried out in 2014, as part of a new project that will pave the way for a comprehensive national labour market information system.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Government of Brunei Darussalam signed an agreement to launch the two-year project, entitled Revision and Enhancement of Labour Market Data Sources: Towards Setting up a Labour Market Information System in Brunei Darussalam, on 9 April 2014.

The US$370,000 project is being funded by the Brunei Government. Under it, the ILO will prepare and implement the labour force survey, update administrative data including jobseekers’ records, analyse labour market statistics and decent work indicators, develop a framework for a labour market information system, and build up the capacity of the Brunei constituents – Government, workers’ and employers ‘organizations – to collect and analyse labour market data.

“This project should help the ILO’s constituents, policy-makers and major stakeholders to have internationally comparable, comprehensive, up-to-date information that will help them design sound labour and social policies, and reduce the time lag between deciding on policies and implementing them,” said ILO Specialist on Labour Statistics for Asia and the Pacific, Tite Habiyakare. “It will also give the Government a full range of indicators for measuring progress on Decent Work, particularly relating to youth, youth employment, and the expectations of jobseekers.”

“The project will support Brunei’s national “Vision 2035,” especially the development, monitoring and implementation of the National Human Resource Development Strategy over the next five years,” said Yoshiteru Uramoto, Assistant Director-General and Regional Director of the ILO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific. “The information obtained will help to strengthen the competitiveness of Brunei’s labour force in the run-up to the freer flow of labour in ASEAN after 2015”.

Brunei joined the ILO in 2007. The ILO’s support to Brunei includes developing employment and skill development strategies for productive employment, enhancing labour governance and rights, promoting occupational health and safety, and strengthening employers' and workers' organisations.
