Programmes and projects

Technical cooperation programmes and projects implemented are one of the main means of action to support constituents in promoting decent work in the African region and to give effect to the Decent Work Agenda in Africa 2007-15.

Since 2002, a total of 560 technical cooperation programmes and projects have been approved for the African region, with a total budget of US$545.2 million. Practically all countries in the region have benefited from such interventions. As of December 2011, there were 205 active technical cooperation projects being managed by the ILO in the African region.

2022

  1. Institutionalizing social protection for accelerated SDG implementation in Nigeria

    1 January 2020 - 31 January 2022

    The Institutionalizing social protection for accelerated SDG implementation in Nigeria is funded by the “Joint UN SDG Fund.” The Project will strengthen social protection at the federal level in Nigeria. In addition, it will implement a social protection programme in Sokoto State to serve as a blueprint for other states.

2021

  1. Support to Tunisian youth through social and solidarity entrepreneurship

    1 August 2019 - 31 December 2021

    The central objective of the project is to create decent jobs for young men and women in disadvantaged regions through the promotion of the social and solidarity economy (SSE) and its organizations.

  2. Trade for Decent Work Project - Ghana

    1 February - 30 December 2021

    The Ghana project is aims at improving the application of the ILO Fundamental Conventions as well as compliance with reporting obligations to the ILO supervisory bodies, in particular regarding child labour and the worst forms of child labour, in sectors with high incidence such as the cocoa sector, and related conventions contributing to decent work in those sectors and connected activities in the local and global value chains such as all services and transport.

  3. Joint COOP/SSE/Social Finance research initiative on Social and solidarity economy and social innovation in Africa

    1 December 2020 - 30 November 2021

    The main objective of this research project is to identify and analyse social innovation cases and experiences initiated by Social and Solidarity Economy Organizations (SSEOs) in Africa.

  4. GHANA : Sustainability through Competitive and Responsible Enterprises, SCORE (Phase III)

    1 November 2017 - 29 October 2021

    The objective of SCORE is that Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are more sustainable through being cleaner, more productive and competitive and provide more sustainable and decent employment.

  5. Strengthening Public Employment Services in English Speaking Africa

    1 April 2018 - 30 June 2021

    Supported by the Republic of Korea, the Employment Policy Department’s - Employment, Labour Markets and Youth Branch (EMPLAB) - of ILO is implementing the project to support strengthening the PES in English speaking Sub-Saharan Africa through upgrading the job portal system and building the capacities of public officials in Namibia and Malawi. The third component involves carrying out a global study to investigate how the use of technology in PES is helping improve service delivery to clients. This project is implemented in line with the Centenary Declaration and the Future of Work Report, which recommend an increase of investment in PES and to optimise digitalisation.

  7. Development of a Social Economy Policy in South Africa (Government of Flanders & National Economic Development Department of South Africa)

    This project seeks to take advantage of the favourable conditions for developing a social economy policy for South Africa, following the implementation of a range of projects that have enhanced existing knowledge and built a community of actors and agencies committed to growing and developing this sector.

  8. The Way Forward after the Revolution: Decent Work for Women in Egypt and Tunisia (Phase II)

    1 April 2018 - 31 March 2021

    The project aims at supporting ILO’s constituents, including the Government, workers’ and employers’ organizations to address the challenges women are facing in the labour market. It seeks to address the barriers to a satisfactory women participation in the labour market through a comprehensive approach that works at the macro, meso and micro levels and that tackles at the same time access to employment, entrepreneurship, decent work conditions, and social dialogue.

  9. Support to Free Movement of persons and Migration in West Africa (FMM) West Africa Technical Assistance project – Summary of ILO Role and Activities

    The FMM Project intervenes in the areas of labour migration, policy development, counter-trafficking, protection of migrants’ rights, child protection, especially children on the move and social security.
