    This study reflects on labour law’s ability, in its current form, to protect workers’ rights and secure decent working conditions in the developing world. It identifies and examines structural weaknesses and challenges brought about by globalization and, against this background, explores regulatory and policy responses which have been made at different governance levels to enhance the scope and application of labour regulation, focusing particularly on Latin America, South Asia and southern Africa. This is a co-publication with Hart Publishing.

    The ILO Summit on the Global Jobs Crisis was held on 15-17 June 2009 in Geneva, in response to the financial crisis and its grave impact on global unemployment, poverty and inequality. Addressed by Heads of State and Government, Vice-Presidents, Ministers and leaders of workers' and employers' organizations from around the world, the Summit featured three days of intense debate on different aspects of the crisis.

    Private employment agencies play an important role in the functioning of contemporary labour markets. They act as intermediaries in modern labour markets, allowing enterprises greater flexibility to increase or decrease their workforces, while ensuring for the workers sufficient security in terms of job opportunities and employment standards, including pay, working time and training.

    The project examined the extent to which the legal framework of 24 selected African countries impacts on and protects the rights of indigenous peoples. The project aimed to contribute to the development of a suitable policy and legal framework for the protection of the rights of indigenous peoples and build the capacity and raise the awareness of relevant actors amongst indigenous peoples and government institutions.

    At its meeting held on 20 August 2001, the Tripartite Negotiating Forum (TNF) noted that it was desiarable to address the totality of the macro-economic problems including the Country Risk Factor. The TNF tasked the Social Partners to draft position papers on the Country Risk factors and the points raised in these papers have been distillled in the development of this Declaration.
