Toward More Job-Rich Growth: The Case of Egypt

This policy note is part of a series of three policy notes on Tunisia, Morocco and Egypt that the ADWA’ Project and the Economic Research Forum (ERF) have jointly developed building on the findings of the 2nd Report on Jobs and Growth with a view to providing policymakers and social partners with action-oriented recommendations to be implemented at country level in line with respective specificities, needs and challenges.

This policy brief presents developments at both the macroeconomic and microeconomic levels just before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. It also shows how the structural characteristics of the Egyptian economy have exacerbated the negative effects of the pandemic, as well as how some cyclical developments have worsened the situation. The policy note also points out that deeper and more structural reforms are needed in order to enable the Egyptian economy to create more and better jobs.
