Hong-Kong: A New Federation of Asian Domestic Workers

Hong Kong, November 19, 2010 (ACTRAV INFO)- A new federation of Asian Domestic Workers in Hong Kong was inaugurated on Sunday, November 21. It represents domestic workers from the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia and Nepal. The new federation has joined the Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions (HKCTU).

The inauguration coincides with the preparation of new international standards on Decent Work for Domestic Workers. The Bureau for Workers’ Activities of the ILO supported the Hong Kong initiative.

A Convention and Recommendation on Domestic Workers will be discussed in June 2011 with a view to their adoption by the International Labour Conference (ILC).

According to ILO estimates, more than 300,000 domestic workers live and work in Hong Kong.
